Learning to Read

You are your child’s first and best teacher!

Share your enthusiasm and love of reading every day with these simple ideas:

  1. Start early! Babies enjoy short periods of sharing a book and love to just “play” with board books.
  2. Make reading time a regularly planned activity every day.
  3. Children learn best when they are actively involved with the book being read. Ask your child questions as you read a book. For example: “What is happening in this picture?” or “What do you think will happen next?”
  4. Sing to and with your child! This fun activity teaches them that words can be broken up into parts or syllables.
  5. Look at our list of 100 Books Every Child Should Hear Before Kindergarten y 25 Libros Para Leer Con Su Hijo Antes Del Kínder.
  6. Help your child notice the words that are all around us. Point out words on signs, newspapers, cereal boxes, etc.
  7. Come to Storytime at your local library!
