Throughout the history of cinema, filmmakers have looked to books for inspiration and content. In 2023, there are plenty of books — both old and new — that will have movie adaptations. You may want to grab a copy of the book before they hit theaters and streaming services in the coming months.

A Man Called Otto: Adapted from the 2012 novel A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, about a retired widower in suburban Pittsburg who has given up on life and wants to die but his life changes when a young family moves in nearby. In theaters now.
Women Talking: Based on the 2018 novel Women Talking by Miriam Toews, which was inspired by the real-life events that occurred at the Manitoba Colony, an isolated Mennonite community in Bolivia. Widespread theater release in January 2023.
Knock at the Cabin: A psychological thriller based on the 2018 novel The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul G. Tremblay. In theaters February 2023.
Emily: A part fictional portrait of English writer Emily Bronte during the events that led her to write the classical novel Wuthering Heights. In theaters February 2023.
Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey: An independent slasher film that offers a horror retelling of the Winnie-the-Pooh book series by A.A. Milne. It follows Pooh and Piglet, who have become feral and embark on a murderous rampage. Limited release in theaters February 2023.
Marlowe: In the late 1930s, a down on his luck detective is hired to find the ex-lover of a glamorous heiress, based on the 2014 novel The Black-Eyed Blonde by John Banville (writing under the pen name Benjamin Black). In theaters February 2023.
Jesus Revolution: Based on the novel Jesus Revolution by Greg Laurie about the Jesus movement in California during the 1970s. In theaters February 2023.
Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret: Based on the 1970 novel Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret by Judy Blume, a coming of age novel about a 6th grade girl on a quest to discover her religious identity. In theaters April 2023.
Love Again: Based on the novel Text For You by Sophie Cramer about a woman who deals with the tragic loss of her fiancé by texting romantic messages to his old cell phone number. In theaters May 2023.
Oppenheimer: The story of J. Robert Operheimer, a critical figure in the Manhatten Project during World War II, adapted from the biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. In theaters July 2023.
The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes: Based on the novel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins, is a prequel to The Hunger Games film series. In theaters November 2023.
Dune Part 2: The sequel to the 2021 film Dune and the conclusion of a two-part film adaptation of the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert. A mythical hero’s journey about a young man who must travel to a dangerous planet to ensure the future of his family and his people. In theaters November 2023.
The Color Purple Musical: The musical adaption of Alice Walker’s novel The Color Purple about the life-long struggles of an African American woman living in the south during the early 1900s. In theaters December 2023.
Wonka: Musical fantasy film that serves as a prequel to the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl and follows the early days of the eccentric chocolatier. In theaters December 2023.

The Pale Blue Eye: Story based on the 2003 novel The Pale Blue Eye by Louis Bayard, follows a veteran detective in 1830 as he investigates a series of murders at the U.S. military academy West Point. Streaming on Netflix in January 2023.
Mayfair Witches: Based on the supernatural horror/fantasy The Mayfair Witches novels by Anne Rice about a family of witches whose fortunes have been guided for generations by a spirit named Lasher. Streaming on AMC and AMC+ in January 2023.
Lockwood & Co.: Three teens band together as paranormal investigators to unravel a conspiracy, based on the Lockwood & Co. book series by Jonathan Stroud. Streaming on Netflix in January 2023.
Dear Edward: A 12-year-old boy struggles to make sense of life after surviving a plane crash that killed his family in this story adapted from the novel Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano. Streaming on Apple TV+ in February 2023.
Daisy Jones & the Six: A miniseries based on the novel Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, a fictional story that follows a rock band in the 1970s that becomes one of the most legendary bands in the world. Streaming on Amazon Prime March 2023.
