We join libraries across the country today in observing National Library Outreach Day!

Formerly known as National Bookmobile Day, this annual celebration during National Library Week highlights the invaluable role libraries play in bringing library services to those in need.

Our Bookmobile and Mail Order Library teams provide free access to library resources to people out in the communities we serve. Our staff go above and beyond to ensure that people with limited abilities to visit a library have equal access to our services.

The Bookmobile

Our library-on-wheels brings many of the materials you find in library — books, magazines, DVDs, music, and more — to rural schools, senior living facilities, job training sites, life skills community programs, free lunch sites, and more.

Last year, the Bookmobile made a total of 618 community stops, serving 4,262 visitors. The Bookmobile also regularly serves 366 students at six rural schools in Chelan, Douglas and Grant counties.

So, what brings our Bookmobile staff job in their work at the library?

“Library joy is creating connection and community for whoever walks in the door, so they feel that the Bookmobile is a place they belong,” said Elizabeth McNall, Bookmobile Lead.

“Why I love the library: The library is a place that creates community, garnishes curiosity, and guides people to self-improvement through planned study and serendipitous findings. People from all walks of life are welcome at the library, encouraged to better themselves and take a minute of repose if needed,” Marco Hernandez, Bookmobile Associate.

Mail Order Library

Our Mail Order Library processed and shipped more than 22,000 packages of library materials to patrons at their homes throughout Chelan, Douglas, Grant, Okanogan and Ferry counites in 2025.

So, what brings our Mail Order staff joy?

  • Kim Fullerton: “ My library joy is finding a book, either new or an old favorite that reconnects me to the feelings I had when I first discovered my love of reading.
  • Marge Chapa: “Fiction gives us empathy: It puts us inside the minds of other people, gives us the gift of seeing through their eyes. Fiction is a lie that tells us true things, over and over.” ― Ray Bradbury , Fahrenheit 451”

It brings me joy to support and hear all about the ways Bookmobile and Mail Order staff connect with and impact the communities they serve. I feel incredibly fortunate to work alongside such a passionate and genuine team- one that continually challenges us to grow while keeping our communities at the heart of everything we do. That spirit truly fills me with library joy. ~ Mary Lou Guerrero, Rural Services Manager
