Fat Bear Week is an annual celebration of brown bears preparing for winter hibernation at Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska. Each fall the event showcases Katmai’s bears as they pack on pounds. A single-elimination tournament invites the public to vote for the bear that best exemplifies success in getting fat for survive the winter.
What started in 2014 as a one-day event has grown into a global phenomenon, highlighting the resilience of brown bears, the importance of healthy salmon runs, and the vibrant ecosystems they sustain.
