One of the greatest joys for library workers is the moment a patron returns to say, “That book you recommended was perfect!” There’s a unique excitement that comes from helping someone discover a story that resonates with them—whether it’s a page-turning thriller, a heartfelt memoir, or a new author they’ve never tried before.

For many of us, connecting people with the right book feels like a small act of magic. It’s not just about knowing what’s popular or well-reviewed—it’s about listening closely, understanding someone’s tastes, and finding that just-right read that could spark a new favorite or reignite a love of reading. In the library world, we call this phenomenon of connecting patrons to books that match their interests, needs and reading goals “reader’s advisory,” and it is the cornerstone of modern libraries.

In today’s libraries, reader’s advisory goes beyond the traditional one-on-one interaction at the reference desk. It includes curated book displays, personalized reading lists, online recommendation tools, genre guides, and even social media engagement. At NCW Libraries, we’ve created a special committee (Adult Reader’s Advisory Committee or ARAC) of various library staff from across our five-county service district. This group meets monthly to talk about how we can combine our knowledge and love of literature with our keen understanding of our various communities’ literary tastes to create meaningful connections between readers and books and foster a love of reading in our communities.

Whether someone is looking for a cozy mystery, a thought-provoking memoir, or the next great read-alike after finishing a beloved series, reader’s advisory bridges the gap between the shelves and the reader’s imagination. Here are some of NCW Libraries’ Reader’s Advisory Committee member’s recommendations for their favorite summer reads!
