November is Native American Heritage Month.

It is a time to celebrate the traditions, languages and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities and ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation.

Native Americans are the indigenous people of the United States. They are a diverse group of more than 570 federally recognized tribes, each with its own culture, languages, and history. In the most recent Census, more than 9.1 million people identified as American Indian and Alaska Native.

Native American culture today is a dynamic blend of cultural preservation and modern adaptions. Cultural traditions are actively maintained, and efforts are underway to preserve languages and protect sacred lands.

The Colville Confederated Tribes are the main tribes in NCW, consisting of 12 confederated bands. The Colvilles have nearly 10,000 enrolled members. The Yakama Indian Nation, while centered in south-central Washington, also does significant work in NCW to protect and restore historic salmon runs and preserve and promote Native American culture.

NCW Libraries has many resources that promote awareness and understanding of Native American stories and voices. Let’s learn, appreciate, and celebrate together this November and all year long.
