Learn how to find solace, hope and inspiration in small gestures like writing poetry and taking a walk in nature in a free virtual Humanities Washington program in April.
Join us on Thursday, April 23, for Great Expectations, A Poetry Workshop with Claudia Castro Luna, former Washington State Poet Laureate and the city of Seattle’s inaugural Civic Poet. Part poetry reading and part discussion, this program will explore the importance of trees and plants in our lives, challenging perceptions of them as passive forms and presenting them as beings with agency who can teach us about beauty, faith, interconnectedness, and our own sense of self.
Claudia Castro Luna was the Washington State Poet Laureate from 2018 to 2021. She is the author of four poetry collections, including two which were shortlisted for the Washington State Book Award: Cipota Under the Moon y Killing Marías. She also writes nonfiction and teaches poetry and creative writing.
She is presenting as part of the Oficina de Oradores de Humanidades de Washington, a roster of 40 speakers, including professors, artists, journalists, and others, who inspire people and engage conversation on a wide range of topics.
