April is Arab American Heritage Month.
Arab Americans are a diverse community of immigrants and descendants who number nearly 4 million people, according to the Arab American Institute. They are Syrians, Lebanese, Egyptians, Palestinians, Iraqis, Jordanians, and Yemenis. This ethnic community is diverse in faith, race, sexual orientation, gender identity and ability.
“Quite simply, the story of Arab Americans is the story of America,” according to the Arab American Institute. “Our history illustrates how the immigrant experience has shaped our country, and how, by engaging fully in civic life, we can bring about meaningful change toward the democratic ideals of equality, justice, and inclusion.”
