Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic oratory and writing were integral to the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. King wrote an open letter in April of 1963, just months before the signing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964, defining his nonviolent campaign and upending racial injustice and violence inflicted upon black America.

King’s gift of blending historical, theological, social, institutional, and political ideas awakened the nation to the reality of hate, what it means, and how it could possibly end. His famous I Have a Dream speech shined a light on the realities and possibilities in America.

King’s prolific scholarship, leadership, and life journey from Atlanta to Washington and beyond offers many different avenues for reading. This MLK Jr. Day, take some time to read his words and read about his life and enduring legacy.
