Poems are a great way to celebrate National Poetry Month, and on April 29th, Poem in Your Pocket Day helps remind you to share poems all day long!  It’s easy to participate and a great way to make someone’s day a little bit better!

Here’s how!  Just choose a poem that is free to be copied or read!  There are some great poems for public use available online , we have listed some below, or you can check out a book of poetry that can be shared from your local  NCW Library!

  • Video yourself reading the poem out loud and share on social media
  • Write your own poem or share a favorite at #PocketPoem
  • Read a poem to a teacher, librarian, co-worker or friend
  • Email a poem to someone
  • Pick up a poem for your pocket from a participating library – Mattawa, Cashmere, Brewster, Warden, Twisp, Pateros, Wenatchee, Tonasket, Waterville, and Coulee City

Clouds

Book coverBy Christina Rossetti

White sheep, white sheep,

On a blue hill,

When the wind stops,

You all stand still.

When the wind blows,

You walk away slow.

White sheep, white sheep,

Where do you go?

Life

Paul Laurence Dunbar – 1872-1906

A crust of bread and a corner to sleep in,

A minute to smile and an hour to weep in,

A pint of joy to a peck of trouble,

And never a laugh but the moans come double;

                      And that is life!

 A crust and a corner that love makes precious,

With a smile to warm and the tears to refresh us;

And joy seems sweeter when cares come after,

And a moan is the finest of foils for laughter;

                      And that is life!

Faults

Sara Teasdale – 1884-1933

They came to tell your faults to me,

They named them over one by one;

I laughed aloud when they were done,

I knew them all so well before,—

Oh, they were blind, too blind to see

Your faults had made me love you more.
