A Wenatchee couple’s spirit of giving back to their community will carry on through a generous donation to North Central Regional Library. The late Rozanne Lind donated $1,000 earlier this year to honor the memory of her late husband Peter Lind, to buy telescopes that could be checked out from the library.

Starting Dec. 1, three telescopes will be available for checkout from the Chelan, Moses Lake and Oroville libraries.

The Zhumell Z Series Dobsonian telescopes are portable, table-top telescopes that offer high quality viewing of the stars for everyone from experienced amateur astronomers to brand new stargazers. The telescopes can be checked out for up to seven days with your NCRL library card, along with three informative book about stars. You must be 18 years old to check out one.

The telescopes are packaged in large protective cases that measure about 2 feet high and 3 feet wide and weigh just over 50 pounds.

Peter Lind was a member of the Apple Valley Astronomers in Wenatchee, which put on regular star parties and hosted educational programs. He passed away in 2016. Rozanne Lind passed away in July.

NCRL’s STEM program has been working this year to expand opportunities that connect people to the natural world through a series of nature activities, snowshoeing programs in schools, stargazing events, nature backpacks that can be checked out from most libraries, snowshoes that can be checked out from the library, and the new telescope program.

“We want to give people opportunities to learn something new and connect them with the natural world around them,” said STEM Manager Heather Inczauskis.
