Today’s blog features a very special author, Heather Ayris Burnell. Not only is Heather an incredibly talented writer, but she is also the librarian at NCW Libraries’ Oroville branch! We are so fortunate to call her one of our own.

Heather is the author of multiple picture books including Bedtime Monster and Kick, Jump, Chop! Most recently, she has created the Unicorn and Yeti series for beginning readers with award winning illustrator Hazel Quintanilla.

This series is part of Scholastic’s early reader line, Acorn, aimed at children who are learning to read. With easy-to-read text, a short-story format, plenty of humor, and full-color artwork on every page, these books will boost reading confidence and fluency. Acorn books plant a love of reading and help readers grow!

Cheer Up is the latest installment of fun for Unicorn and Yeti.

Use your library card to check out the whole series!

#1: Sparkly New Friends– in Englishen Español

Unicorn and Yeti run into each other while looking for sparkly things, and despite some differences (for instance Unicorn is magic, Yeti is not, Yeti likes snowball fights, Unicorn cannot throw snowballs), the two discover that they both love sparkly things, magic rainbows, and — most of all — being best friends!

#2: A Good Team– in Englishen EspañoleBook

Yeti is good at kicking the ball.

Unicorn is not. Unicorn is good at running fast. Yeti does not want to run at all. Unicorn and Yeti may be very different but playing together is always more fun!

#3: Friends Rock– in Englishen Español

Yeti loves playing on the swing. Unicorn would like a turn.

Unicorn loves eating peaches. Yeti would like to try one.

Unicorn and Yeti find a sparkly rock. They would both like to take it home.

Can these magical friends discover how to share?

#4: Cheer Up– in Englishen Español

Unicorn has a gift for Yeti. Yeti does not have one to give to Unicorn. Yeti loves to crunch icicles. Unicorn wants to try crunching them, too! Yeti thinks the dark forest is pretty. Maybe Unicorn needs to see the forest from a different perspective?

Look for Fair and Square, book #5 of the series, coming out in March!

Our libraries have yeti craft kits for kids this week! These kits are free and include everything you’ll need to make your own yeti. They are given out during curbside pickup hours on a first come, first served basis. Find out when your library is open for curbside HERE.
