Her first book, I Was Their American Dream: A Graphic Memoir, won the 2020 Arab American Book Award and was named one of the Best Books of the Year by NPR. Gharib, the daughter of immigrant parents, writes about a childhood of chasing her parents’ expectations, learning to switch between her family’s Filipino and Egyptian customs, adapting to a white culture, and holding on to her cultural values while trying to be an American kid.

Gharib’s new graphic memoir, It Won’t Always Be Like This, is coming out on Sept. 20. The book is described as a time capsule of her childhood memories visiting her father in Egypt each summer and reflects on her identity, relationships, values, and family.

By day, Gharib works on NPR’s science desk, reporting on global health and development topics such as humanitarian aid and gender and income inequality.

All NCW Virtual Reads events are free and open to the public. Events will be held through the Zoom digital meeting platform. To participate, register here. Registrants will receive an email with the Zoom meeting information.

During each event, attendees will hear from the author and then have an opportunity to submit questions through the chat feature for the author to answer live.
