Northwest author Matthew Sullivan will give a live, virtual talk this week on the evolution of the mystery genre of books. To accompany his talk, he has shared a list of recommended crime fiction that he has enjoyed reading.

While the list is not exhaustive, he said he selected the books for the following reasons:

  • for their humane, fully-realized representation of the victim and other characters
  • for their “literary” qualities (character development, rich themes, figurative depth, or attention to style)
  • for their strong social commentary and for using the genre as a vehicle for social change
  • for subverting or bending the “rules” of the genre, such as experimenting with form or concept
  • for their connections to the Pacific Northwest

Sullivan’s talk, A Nicer Kind of Murder, will be at 7 p.m. Thursday
