World Read Aloud Day is coming up on Feb. 1.
We are encouraging everyone to participate in this global literacy movement that is all about showing the world that the right to read belongs to all people.
Studies show that reading aloud to children every day puts them almost a whole year ahead of children who aren’t read to, regardless of parent income, education level or cultural background!
Our Wenatchee and Moses Lake libraries will be hosting read-aloud events throughout the day on Feb. 1. Some of our other libraries also have things planned:
- Moses Lake: Community members and library staff will be reading.
- Okanogan: Staff will be reading out loud the first page of several books starting at 3:30 p.m.
- Omak: During the week of Jan. 26, Omak will have a display of good read-aloud books to be checked out.
- Waterville: The book Gretchen Groundhog, It’s Your Day will be read aloud, and then children can make groundhog sock puppets from
3-4 p.m. - Wenatchee: Library staff members will be reading a different book out loud every 30 minutes all day.
Here are some tips for reading aloud:
- Read the book beforehand to familiarize yourself with the story. Make note of any places you want to stop and ask questions.
- Be animated! Change your voice to match the expressions of the characters and emotions oft he story.
- Use different voices for different characters.
- Ask questions out loud as you read. Ask listeners to predict what will happen next, how they would feel if they were in the story, or the meaning of
a world that might be new.
