Work on the Chelan Public Library’s Reimagining Spaces project has been temporarily paused after construction crews uncovered previously hidden water damage in the nearly 100-year-old building. NCW Libraries is working closely with the City of Chelan to assess the issue and move forward with a thoughtful, long-term plan that protects the historic structure and the community’s investment.

The project pause allows time for architectural and engineering experts to fully evaluate the damage and design an appropriate repair plan before construction resumes. City leaders and NCW Libraries agree that addressing the issue now is the best path forward to ensure the library remains safe, welcoming, and sustainable for decades to come.

“While delays are never ideal, this pause reflects a shared commitment between the City and NCW Libraries to do the work right,” said Tim Dillman, Associate Director of Community Libraries. “We’re grateful for the strong partnership and clear communication that’s guiding this process.”

Library Services Continue

Although construction is on hold, Chelan Library staff continue to provide limited open hours in the library lobby as well as services and programs throughout the community, ensuring residents have consistent access to library resources, technology support, and early-learning opportunities. Community members are also encouraged to visit the nearby Manson Library for programs, browsing, and more.

In March, we are again partnering with Humanities Washington to offer How Women Won the Marathon and Changed Our View of Gender, exploring the lasting impact of the first woman to run the Boston Marathon nearly 60 years ago.

Looking Ahead

NCW Libraries and the City of Chelan will continue to share updates as plans move forward.  The finished project will reflect Chelan residents priorities for flexible and inviting spaces for children and teens, more quiet comfortable seating for adults, improved technology access, and an overall calmer, more welcoming environment.
