Reimagining Spaces – Curlew

The Curlew Library has served as a central community hub since opening in 2015, thanks to the vision and dedication of the Curlew Library Friends. Every inch of the 1,620 square foot space is regularly utilized for programming, activities, and connection. In order to meet growing community needs, the Curlew Friends started planning and fundraising in 2019 to add 480 square feet to the library. NCW Libraries is excited to partner with the Curlew Friends and community members to write the next chapter for the Curlew Library. Work is projected to start in Spring of 2023. According to community feedback, the expansion will likely focus on the following needs:

  • Update furniture, flooring, and paint
  • Small meeting room
  • Larger creative studio space
  • Private staff area
  • Improved service point

On May 10th, NCW Libraries and The Friends of the Curlew Library partnered to host community engagement events in Curlew. A designer from Library Forward was on hand to hear feedback from community members on what they love about their library and what they would love to see in the redesign.

UPDATE: The results of our community engagement are in! We heard plenty of great feedback from the community. The overwhelming majority liked the Off the Grid and Retreat design directions. The preference for the Community Living Room, Nature Classroom, and Creative Arts Studio will likely result in a space with lots of flexible furniture that can stand up to messy projects and meet the needs of a variety of ages and types of groups.
